( Best ) Ignorance is bliss
Ignorance is bliss
“Ignorance is bliss” is a phrase coined by Thomas Gray in his 1768 “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College”. The sentiment was already expressed by Publilius Syrus: In nil sapiendo vita iucundissima est. (In knowing nothing, life is most delightful.)
Knowledge about certain things is good. Knowing about things beforehand helps us to avoid problems or allows our creativity to bloom…But even if we are aware of everything, still how long we can avoid problematic things in our life. In today’s time, people want to be updated about any kind of news. Without even bothering about its relevance in one’s life. As we all are mystically connected with each other in this universe. Every event impacts our life or creates ripples in our life condition whether we want it or not.
Ignorance is bliss Important Points
Generally speaking, ignorance is a detestable state of mind. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to deal with life. But ignorance itself doesn’t equal stupidity. For instance, I view myself as someone who is smart enough to realize his huge capacity for stupidity. I know there are massive gaps in my cultural and general knowledge. I would define my intellectual state as, at times, unaware. But who am I kidding? In some areas of life, I’m just plain ignorant, even if not by choice.
Many people would view this as a flaw or a hindrance, but it’s simply human nature. There isn’t a person on this planet who knows everything, despite the plenty I’ve met who think they do! The fact that I’m aware enough to recognize my own ignorance gives me an immediate advantage, especially in design or any creative pursuit. A lack of knowledge in any field can be a fantastic catalyst for learning. If I have the opportunity to work on a project that involves a subject I know nothing about, I jump at it! It’s a perfect chance to fill in a few of my mental chasms.
Somewhere I feel knowledge makes us more like a machine. The brain allows all kind of information to enter inside us. Being knowledgeable makes our thought process more selective. It filters every kind of information according to our own convenience. It devoids the human brain to have any kind of emotion. In today’s time, it’s important to be emotional. It is the most important factor in being human.
Whereas ignorance always keeps us humble. It keeps human interaction healthy. Its good to be ignorant in this fast-changing world. To survive, human touch is more essential than any kind of information.
Ignorance has its place in life for awhile, though. Parents protect their children from knowledge which is too much for them to bear, too confusing for their little minds to process. For some time, children can operate successfully under the “need-to-know basis” of parental protection. But ignorance in this sense only works if there is an adult mind on the scene to do the protecting. As we grow and become more independent, we must develop an adult mind of our own. Otherwise, we are in big, big trouble. It’s not hard to imagine what I mean by that, but I like how one person put it: “When you’re an adult, ignorance-is-bliss today means you have an STD tomorrow.”
That’s why ignorance is bliss…
