Tatiana Maslany almost gave up acting at age 20. The ‘Orphan Black’ actress began her career as a child actor at the age of 11 and won a full-time role in the Canadian children’s television series ‘2030 CE’ as a teenager, but she recently confessed that she nearly gave up her profession after getting disillusioned with her life choices.
In an interview with The Guardian, she explained: “I had a strong need to reconsider why I was doing it (acting). Was I doing it just because it was something I did as a child?”
After seeing Gena Rowlands’ 1974 film A Woman Under the Influence, she changed her mind and chose to pursue her profession.
Tatiana continued: “I thought, “This is it! That is what I want!’ I want that degree of independence, ingenuity, presence, and connection. It was very impressive to see. This film taught me what was possible.”
Her career has subsequently flourished with prominent roles in sci-fi TV programme ‘Orphan Black’ and with Nicole Kidman in the 2018 film ‘Destroyer,’ and she is currently heading the cast of the Marvel series ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.’
Tatiana said, in reference to her most recent television show, that she hopes the day would come when female superheroes are no longer regarded exceptional.
She told the Guardian, “I’m very interested in when these (marginalised) voices get to speak without it being like, ‘Oh my God, it’s all women’ or ‘Oh my God, this is a narrative about a gay couple,’ and when those stories become as naturally expected as they are currently exceptional.”
